At some point, someone — a tender authority, a big client, a bank, is going to ask you to “prove you’re tax compliant” 📋

If you go looking for the old paper Tax Clearance Certificate, you’ll find it doesn’t really exist anymore. SARS modernised the whole thing, and in 2026 what people call “tax clearance” is actually a Tax Compliance Status (TCS) PIN. Here’s what that means and how to get one.

⚠️ SARS can change eFiling screens and requirements, confirm the current process in your SARS profile before relying on a PIN for a deadline.

🔄 The paper certificate is gone — meet the TCS PIN

SARS replaced the old printed Tax Clearance Certificate with the Tax Compliance Status system. Instead of a certificate that’s outdated the moment it’s printed, you now get a PIN that lets a third party verify your compliance in real time, online 🕐

Why the change? Two big reasons: printed certificates were easily forged, and they showed your status only on the day they were issued. The PIN shows your live status at the exact moment someone checks it, which is far more secure and honest.

The practical catch: because it’s live, you can’t just get compliant once and wave an old certificate forever. Your status changes with your behaviour, so you have to stay compliant 🔁

📋 What “tax compliant” actually means to SARS

Your status hinges on a few things all being in order:

All returns submitted — income tax, VAT, PAYE, provisional, nothing outstanding

No money owed to SARS (or a formal payment arrangement in place)

Registered for all the tax types you should be

Your registered details (like the representative taxpayer) are correct

Miss any one, even an old forgotten VAT return, and your whole status can flip to non-compliant 🚩

✅ How to get your Tax Compliance Status PIN

The process runs through eFiling:

1️⃣ Register for eFiling if you haven’t, and make sure at least one tax type (Income Tax, PAYE or VAT) is active

2️⃣ Activate the Tax Compliance Status service — you only do this once, and it stays active

3️⃣ Open your My Compliance Profile (MCP) — this shows your status with colour-coded indicators

4️⃣ Fix anything red before you apply (more on that below)

5️⃣ Submit a TCS request — choose the correct type, usually Good Standing (there’s also Approval International Transfer for moving funds abroad)

6️⃣ Receive your PIN — if your affairs are in order, SARS issues an overall status and a PIN, which you can get via SMS or on your eFiling dashboard

7️⃣ Share the PIN with the third party. They can verify your live status online, but they can’t see anything else about your tax affairs — your information stays confidential. 🔒

❓ What is “My Compliance Profile” and why does the colour matter?

Your MCP is your live SARS report card 📊 It shows every tax type you’re registered for and flags each as compliant or not:

🟢 Green — your affairs are in order, you’re good to go

🔴 Red — something’s wrong, and you won’t get a clean PIN until it’s fixed

The beauty of the MCP is that it tells you exactly what’s non-compliant, an outstanding return, a debt, a registration issue, so you know what to fix.

❓ My profile is red — how do I fix it?

Work through whatever it flags:

📄 Outstanding returns? Submit them via eFiling, your status usually updates within 24–48 hours

💰 Money owed? Pay it (allow a few days to reflect), or apply for a payment arrangement if you can’t pay in full

🏢 Registration/details issue? Update your registered representative or details

⚖️ Disagree with the status? Use the “Challenge Status” option on eFiling to submit a motivation and supporting documents

The most common nasty surprise is discovering, mid-tender, that an old VAT or PAYE obligation you forgot about has quietly turned you red. Which brings us to the golden rule 👇

❓ How do I stay tax compliant year-round?

Don’t treat compliance as a last-minute scramble before a tender. Stay green by:

📅 Submitting on time — VAT (every 2 months), PAYE (monthly), provisional tax (August & February)

🔍 Checking your MCP monthly so nothing sneaks up on you 💬 Talking to SARS early if you can’t pay, rather than going silent

A business that’s always compliant never loses a deal waiting for SARS 💪

🎯 Stay tender-ready, always

Your Tax Compliance Status can be the difference between winning a contract and watching it go to a competitor while you scramble to submit three years of returns. Staying green year-round is simply good business.

The team at Go2 Accounting keeps South African businesses continuously tax compliant, returns filed, SARS happy, and your TCS PIN ready the moment a tender or client asks for it.

Because “tax clearance” delays cost deals, and staying compliant is far easier than fixing non-compliance 😉
